VR health officials worried over COVID-19 spread in the region

Must Read

The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) situation in the Volta Region is now unacceptable, according to Dr Senanu Kwesi Djokoto, Deputy Director of Health (DDH) in-charge of public health in the region.

He said that there is the urgent need for an immediate and decisive action from all stakeholders to curb the trend with a change of attitude to adhere strictly to COVID-19 safety protocols.

Dr Djokoto revealed in an interview in Ho on Friday that 990 cases of the virus were recorded in the region in the past four weeks.

Out the figure, he said, 270 active cases were concentrated in Ho.

According to Dr Dzokoto, 92 active cases were recorded in Kpando, 40 in Aflao and 38 in Hohoe.

He said that the mortalities from the virus were disturbing, with 20 deaths in the past two weeks.

Those who died included a 94-year-old woman, with the rest above 60, the DDH added.

Dr Djokoto said that: “This is mounting pressure on Intensive Care Unit (ICU) beds at the health facilities.”

He said that the flagrant violation of COVID-19 safety protocols by members of the public was definitely responsible for the present COVID-19 situation in the region.

“Some members of the public are still not accepting the fact that people are dying as a result of COVID-19 and this is very worrying,” Dr Djokoto told the Ghanaian Times.

He said the time that would have been used to attend to other cases at the health facilities was now committed largely to COVID-19 cases.

Dr Djokoto called on traditional authorities, churches, schools, transport unions, the media and other stakeholders to jointly and actively take part in the crusade to modify the attitude of the majority of the people in the region to embrace the safety COVID-19 protocols.
