At least seven people have drowned on the Volta Lake after their boat capsized during a heavy storm while they were travelling on the lake last Thursday at Afram Plains North in the Eastern region.
The deceased included Aku Dzetror, 60, Esther Akorli, 31, Faulting Kpeli, 32, Evelyn Akpaglo, 31, Aku Adanyo, 55, Mary Magic, 39, and Edward Gati, 31.
A total of 13 people who were also on board the boat were said to have been rescued by some local fishermen in the area.
The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at a private mortuary on the dwarf Island near the area of the incident.
Meanwhile, the boat Operator, EkemeveAmowuga, who went missing was being searched for by the rescue team.
Confirming the incident to the Ghanaian Times, the Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ebenezer Tetteh, said the incident occurred at 8 am on Thursday.
He said the 20 passengers, who were on board the capsized boat, were returning from their farms from Gyemeni to Havekope, Island Community on the Volta lake.
DSP Tetteh said upon reaching the Dwarf Islands, the boat capsized due to a heavy storm resulting in the deceased and others getting drowned.
He said the bodies of the deceased were retrieved and deposited at a private mortuary on the island while a team of rescuers and fishermen were still searching for the boat operator.
