South Africa eyes massive wins over Sao Tome

South Africa will play Sao Tome and Principe in the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Both matches will be played in South Africa with the first game scheduled to take place on November 13 and the reserve fixture is set to be played on November 16. 

Bafana Bafana succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Zambia in their last match which was a friendly encounter in October 2020. 

As a result, Bafana are winless in their last two matches having recorded a draw and a defeat.

Their last victory came against Sudan in November 2019 as they emerged 1-0 winners in the 2022 AFCON qualifier.

Moelfi Ntseki, the South Africa head coach, says his side needs to against Sao Tome and Principe.

“We are fully aware that winning home and away against Sao Tome is a must,” Ntseki said. 

“It being a must is not only about the performance, but also the mental side of it. As South Africa, we need to approach each and every game with a high level of aggression. 

“We ended up depending more on flair and creativity. But when it comes to tactical endurance we tend to struggle.”

Meanwhile, Sao Tome and Principe suffered to a 1-0 defeat to Ghana in their last game which was the 2022 AFCON qualifier in November 2019. 

As a result, the Falcons and True Parrots Team are winless in their last two matches across all competitions having registered two successive defeats.

Their last victory came against Mauritius as they secured a 2-1 win in the 2022 AFCON qualifier in October 2019.

This will be the first-ever meeting between South Africa and Sao Tome and Principe.
