Police have arrested Alhaji Rufai Vielim, one of the Vice-Chairpersons of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Northern Region, after the Tuesday attack on the party office.
According to police sources, Alhaji Rufai admitted in his statement that the persons who were involved in the destruction of property at the regional office of the party, were in his house on Monday.
However, Alhaji Vielim said he did not sanction the act of vandalism.
The arrest comes after his name was mentioned as being the one who incited some persons to carry out violent activities at the NDC regional office.
Some unknown persons on Tuesday massed up, went to the NDC regional office, at Tamale, and destroyed properties amid gunshots, over the appointment of Adolf Ali as the acting NDC Regional chairman.
The party’s leadership in the region asked Mr Adolf to actas regional chairman following the death of the party’s chairman, Alhaji Ibrahim Mobila.
Islamic Adua was held for Mobila, last Sunday, which was graced by former President, 2020 NDC presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama.
The youth vandalized chairs and property, belonging to the NDC and locked up the party office, after they ordered workers to leave the place.
The youth, who allegedly arrived at the party office on motor cycles, fired gun shots amidst the commotion, demanding that Vellim rather be allowed to act as regional chairman of the party.
