One person has been arrested by the police for his alleged involvement in the illegal demolition of 11 houses at Panpanso No1, near TeacherMante, on the Nsawam-Suhum road, in the Eastern Region, which led to violence in the area.
Famous Dogbe, a 23-year-old rider of commercial motorcycle,popularly known as ‘Okada”, is in the custody of the police assisting in investigations.
At least two hundred irate youth, reportedly become agitated by the demolishing and blocked the Accra-Nsawam Highway with logs and burnt lorry tyres.
The Director of the Police Public Affairs, Superintendent of Police (Supt) AlexanderKwekuObeng, who disclosed this to the Ghanaian Times, said the police received reports of an illegal demolishing of houses at Panpanso No. 1.
He stated when the police Teacher Manterushed to the scene,they realised that the affected persons,numbering over 200, had embarked on a demonstration, blocked the Accra –Nsawam Highway with logs and burnt lorry tyres.
Supt Obengsaid the police convinced the youth to be calm and order was restored, adding that the police visited the demolished scene and found that about 11houses were destroyed by unknown persons with the aid of loader machine, leaving the dwellers homeless.
Supt Obeng said the loader machine had been driven away before the police arrived at the scene,but Dogbewas arrested for alleged involvement in the demolition.
He said the police were on a manhunt for Kofi Acquah, accused of being “the brain” behind the demolition.
The Ghanaian Times gathered that the Kibi Divisional Commander, Chief Supt Magnus Sam, and the Nsawam Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Isaac KojoBuabeng, visited the scene to assess the situation.
