Victims of floods that submerged farmlands and destroyed crops in the Nadowli-Kaleo District of the Upper West Region in August this year, on Saturday received a donation of items worth GH₵10,000 from the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Mr. Anthony Sumah Mwin kaarah, on behalf of the Methodist Development and Relieve Services (MDRS) Ghana.
The items which were basically food commodities were meant to cushion the victims in anticipation of the next planting season, as most of them had lost their crops to the flood whereas others who invested heavily in fertilizer and other farm inputs, saw their investments go down the drain when their farms were destroyed by the flood.
The items included 50 bags of 25 kilogrammes rice, 20 bags of iodised salt, and 20 baskets of dry fish which were purchased by the MP with a cash donation received from the MDRS after he made a passionate appeal to them for support for the victims.
The MP who visited some of the worst-hit victims to update himself with their recovery progress told the media that he received a cash donation of GH₵10,000 from the MDRS with which he purchased the commodities he presented to the people.
“There are no more floods but the effect of the flood is still here with the people because the planting season is over and they were unable to cultivate any crop; I will therefore like to appeal to benevolent individuals and organisations to come to the aid of our people”, he said.
He appealed to the various community leaders who received the donation on behalf of the communities to ensure fairness and equitable distribution by giving priority to women as they were responsible for feeding the children and also taking care of the home.
Mr. Mwinkaara used the opportunity to reinvigorate the energies of the victims and assured them that he was working earnestly to secure more support for them.
He commended the Methodist Church for the prompt response to his appeal and encouraged them to continue supporting individual and national development.
Recipients of the items expressed their appreciation to the MP and the Methodist church for the items and called on other benevolent persons to also come to their aid as they had no farm produce to support them till the next farming season.
