A seven-member board of directors for the Bui Power Authority (BPA) was over the weekend inaugurated by the Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, in Accra.

The board has the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Sunyani East Constituency, Kwasi Ameyaw-Cheremeh, as the chairman, with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the authority, Samuel Kofi Dzamesi as a member.

Other members are; Salifu Sa-eed, Ama Tima Boakye, Paul Twum-Barimah, Mrs Rebecca Acquah-Arhin and Kwame Appiah-Kyei.

Dr Prempeh commended the members for accepting to serve on the board of the BPA.

He said by their appointment, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has shown so much faith in them as men and woman of integrity and honour and expects them to discharge their duties efficiently.

Dr Prempeh said in the next four years, the people of Ghana would be looking at their performance and how they honour their responsibilities.

He said “Bui Power Authority is set up by Act (Act 740, 2007) to execute and manage the Bui Hydroelectric Project and its generation station.

Dr Prempeh said in December 2020, “an amendment was made to the Act to allow you to execute your mandate as far as renewable energy was concerned,” he said.

The minister stated that ‘In fact, you are the agency doing the biggest utility project in the country so far. But your sister company, VRA also has the mandate to do that as well as integrate using other forms of energy.

Dr Prempeh said “there is a strong thought that since you are all of the same water body, maybe we should combine all our healthy assets into one going forward”.

He noted that the BPA was a key player not only in generating power for the country, but also meeting the country’s target in clean and renewable energy as far as the Paris Climate Accord was concerned.

Dr Prempeh said “We also as a country need BPA to function and function well to act as the counter balance that is stabiliser of our national grid system”.

Mr Ameyaw-Cheremeh on behalf of the members thanked the President for the confidence reposed in the board.

He said they would work hard to justify the confidence reposed in them and sustain the legacy of BPA, which was a legacy of former President John Agyekum Kufour.
