Mahama: Govt worsening plight of citizenry

Must Read

Former President John Mahama has stated that the policies, programmes and social interventions was worsening the plight of the citizenry.

“The country is currently facing hardships on a scale never witnessed in the 30-year history of our Fourth Republic as a result of incompetence, corruption, and waste of scarce resources combined to make life unbearable for the generality of Ghanaians,” he bemoaned.

Former President Mahama said the youth were suffering the most from broken promises from the government and berated Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia over the depreciation of the cedi.

Speaking at the launch of the Tertiary Education Institution Network (TEIN) App held at the University of Professional Studies, he contended that the government had bungled important task of securing welfare and wellbeing of the youth through sound policies in education and ensuring availability of employment opportunities.

He cited inflation, rising fuel prices, and the depreciation of the cedi as key challenges facing citizens and indicated that that “the dollar has rather arrested Dr Bawumia, we are looking for him and we cannot find him’.

Former President Mahama also accused the government over the country’s unemployment rate and claimed the country was currently experiencing the highest level of unemployment recorded in the Fourth Republic, at an estimated 14 per cent but failed to give the source of his data.

“The government’s response has been adoption of short-sighted, populist, ad-hoc and poorly conceived programmes that have done more harm than good including those enrolled in the knee-jerk Nation Builders Corps programme have found themselves at home after three years and remain unpaid for several months and national service personnel, for the first time, are owed several months’ allowances,” he decried.

Former President Mahama took on the government over the worsening economic conditions which had plunged the country into economic and social distress and alleged that the government came to power on the back of mouth-watering promises to make life easier for the citizenry and ensured rapid socioeconomic development. –citinewsroom.com
