President-elect John Dramani Mahama has formally met with outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to inaugurate the 2024 National Transition Team, marking a critical milestone in Ghana’s democratic process.

The meeting, held Wednesday, December 11, at the Jubilee House in Accra, signals the start of an organised and peaceful transition of power from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The National Transition Team, a constitutional body mandated to oversee the handover process, will play a pivotal role in ensuring a smooth transfer of power. This process includes briefing the incoming government on key state matters, facilitating access to vital government data, and coordinating the formal inauguration of the President-elect.

The meeting between the two leaders underscores Ghana’s strong democratic tradition, where outgoing and incoming administrations collaborate to uphold the country’s governance framework.

Addressing attendees, President-elect Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to fostering unity and stability as the NDC prepares to assume office.

“Mr. President has given me a brief on the security situation, both internal and external, and also a short brief on issues having to do with the economy. The transitional teams will drill down further into these matters, and we are going to work together in the interest of Ghana to ensure a seamless transition.”

Outgoing President Akufo-Addo expressed similar sentiments, emphasising the importance of continuity and cooperation.

“I assure him [John Dramani Mahama] of my full support and that of my government over the transitional process to make sure that his administration takes off in the best of condition.”
