A former Minister of Finance, Dr Kwabena Duffuor, has declared his intention to be President of Ghana although his party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is yet to open nominations for the presidential race ahead of the 2024 elections.
He was the Minister of Finance under the Atta Mills’-led administration and hinted he would welcome a decision of the delegate of the NDC to make him the presidential candidate for the party in the next general elections.
Dr Duffuor, who was the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, indicated that there were two people doing well in politics and cited the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin and Haruna Iddrisu who had been working hard to sustain the nation’s political dispensation.
“There are two people who are doing very well in politics, they are lawyers, look at Mr Bagbin with over 30 years in politics, look at this young man, Mr Iddrisu, any of them, if I have Mr Iddrisu or Mr Bagbin, any could be my running mate, they are working hard, they are in politics and they will compliment me.
“I was the Minister of Finance, I was in politics but we have not started talking about the NDC presidential race yet, if we get there and I am given the nod why not? I am thinking of fighting for the position of the flag bearer for the National Democratic Congress and when people want a position, they are not contesting, rather they are fighting for that position and that is what I intend to do,” Dr Duffuor postulated.
According to him, even though the party had not opened nomination for individuals interested in vying for the flag bearer race, he was thinking of taking up the challenge but stated that some people who had influence at a point in time asked him to contest and he did not take the decision early on.
Dr Duffuor indicated that the leadership of the NDC needed to educate, sensitise and create awareness of its members, supporters, sympathisers and well-wishers to understand where the party was heading towards, and his decision to ask people to join the party was aimed at encouraging Ghanaians to come together to build a formidable party.
He disclosed that the closure of his bank, Unibank, was a painful experience he had to go through. Even though the closure was a big blow to him, he was lucky to have his family behind him, adding that “painful experience but I understood it, I have been a governor, I have been a Finance Minister, high profile jobs, you will pay for that, I paid heavily for it but because of my family, I was able to handle it.”
Dr Duffuor said due to the closure, some of his businesses were affected while others are doing well. However, he petitioned Parliament to investigate the conduct of the Bank of Ghana and the Ghana Stock Exchange following the revocation of the licenses of his financial institution during the banking sector clean-up which commenced in 2017.
Dr Duffuor is currently litigating the collapse of his bank with the hope of getting the court to declare that, merging his bank with others to form the Consolidated Bank is null and void . -3news.com/ghanaweb.com/citinewsroom.com
