Kwabena Donkor, a former Minister of Power, has advocated the immediate resignation of the Minister of Finance, for his abysmal performance.

“Ken Ofori-Atta, as the Minister of Finance, in handling of the economy is abysmal and does not deserve to remain in office in the wake of the financial crisis and should emulate my gesture,” he stated.

Mr Donkor, the Member of Parliament (MP) Pru West Constituency in the Bono East Region, resigned back in 2015 due to his administration’s failure to end load shedding under his watch as Minister.

“I resigned as Minister of Power in 2015 on the basis of internal differences, we got to a point when I announced the end of load shedding but some people disagreed and I said ‘fine, then let me go”, fortunately, after I left we did not experience that load shedding again and that is my satisfaction so on the back of this I want Mr Ofori-Atta to emulate my gesture,” he pointed out.

He threatened that Parliament would be forced to pass a motion of censure against Mr Ofori-Atta to remove him if he did not pay heed since the 1992 Constitution provided for a censure motion which would be explored.

Mr Donkor insisted that Parliament would be delinquent on its responsibility if it did support such a push in a bi-partisan manner.

“Mr Ofori-Atta should resign as a matter of honour and already, there is pressure mounting on him to resign following the country’s decision to seek an International Monetary Fund bailout however, I think the President may not be able to sack him for political reasons,” Mr Donkor stated.

He urged the Minister to do the honourable thing by immediately resigning which would give President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo the opportunity to appoint someone and save an embarrassment adding that “if you have somebody who only a few weeks ago indicated that we will never go there now leading the negotiations, that is an untenable position”.

According to him, in politics, the President’s hands may be tied and others would have to do the desirable and threatened that Parliament would be forced to pass a motion of censure against Mr Ofori-Atta to remove him if he did not pay heed.
