Kasoa Bulk Supply Point project nears completion

Must Read

The Kasoa Bulk Supply Point (BSP) in the Awutu-Senya East Municipality of the Central Region, which will ensure improved and reliable power supply to residents and businesses, is 93 per cent complete.

The project, worth US$49,342,277.76, commenced in January 2020, and it is expected to be completed in March 2022.

The Kasoa BSP, of maximum capacity of 435 Mega Volts Amps (MVA), is a Gas Insulated Switchgear (GIS) substation, and when completed would be the second largest bulk supply station in the country after the Pokuase BSP.

The Senior Project Manager of Millennium Development Authority(MiDA), Mr Mawunyo Rubson, revealed this to the Ghanaian Times in an interview in Accra.

He said the project was being provided by the United States government, through its agency, the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), as part of the grant funds provided to Ghana under the Ghana Power Compact Programme.

Mr Rubson said electricity consumers in the municipality experienced low voltages and frequent outages due to the increasing demand for electricity for both commercial and domestic uses.

He was optimistic that the Kasoa BSP would enhance the quality and reliability of electric power to boost socio-economic activities in the area.

Mr Rubson said the Electro-Mechanical installations and testing are essentially complete. The “ECG section of the sub-station is 100 per cent completed and the ECG 33kV switchgear energised with temporary power supplied from the Winneba BSP,” he said.

He said the project was a critical asset needed to improve power supply in order to meet the increasing demands of commerce, industry and numerous domestic consumers located in the fast growing Kasoa municipality and its environs.

Mr Rubson said the contractor is currently working on completing all internal roads and yard surfacing works within and around the GIS/Transformer area, so as to allow the final substation energisation scheduled for February 7 to 19, 2022.

He said upon completion, the infrastructure would contribute to reducing the frequency and duration of power outages suffered by communities and businesses in Kasoa and its surrounding communities.

“It would also reduce the transmission and distribution system losses suffered by GRIDCo and ECG respectively, and ultimately improve the operational and financial performance of the utility firms,” he stated.

He said Kasoa BSP forms part of activities under the ECG Financial and Operational Turnaround (EFOT) Project.
