A Group of angry young men attacked the Akatsi Police Station with stones, bottles and also threatened to burn down the place last Friday.
This follows the death of one man, EtornamAvulekpor who was arrested by the police the previous day for possessing 64 wrappers of dried leaves suspected to be marijuana.
Also found in the possession of the suspect were a number of cellular phones believed to be stolen.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) EffiaTenge, Public Affairs Officer of the Volta Regional Police Command, Avulekpor fell ill while in police custody and was rushed the Hoggar Clinic in Akatsi for treatment.
DSP Tenge said that the suspect was later referred to the Ho Teaching Hospital later that day.
The suspect died the next day, she said.
When news of Avulekpor’s death reached Akatsi, the youth stormed the police station with lorry tyres and gallons of petrol, threatening to set the place on fire while throwing stones and bottles about angrily.
DSP Tenge said that it took the timely intervention of a reinforced team of officers from the Tongu Police Division to avert catastrophe.
She said that an autopsy was yet to be performed on the body of the deceased to establish the cause of death.
Meanwhile, the Volta Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Edward Kwateng has given the assurance that the cause of the suspect’s death would be investigated meticulously, saying: “We shall definitely get to the bottom of the matter.”
The Deputy Volta Regional Police Commander ACP BoaduEkumah and the Akatsi South Municipal Chief Executive, MrKofitseNyahe have visited the bereaved families.
