Cantonment Youth men’s handball team suffered their fourth defeat of the ongoing Greater Accra Handball League when they lost 31-29 to Unique Fingers at the Prison’s Handball Court on Saturday.
Despite taking an early lead in the opening minutes of the game, Cantonment Youth capitulated and allowed their opponents to take charge of the game to end the first stanza 15-11 in favour of Unique Fingers with center forwards Richard Mensah and Sampson Bonney leading the onslaught.
Back from the break, Cantonment Youth lifted up their game with pivot Joseph Kweku Dossu coming on to create space for the likes of Elvis Oko Sowah and Abraham Osabukle to reduce the deficit.
But their defence and goalkeeping frailties proved their bane as they committed errors in turns to hand the opposition the advantage.
With two minutes left on the clock, Cantonment Youth managed to close the scores to 29-28 but lost concentration again at the back which their opponents capitalised on to increase the tally to 31-29.
In other games, Ghana Navy defeated El-Wak Wing 30-22 while Ghana Prisons defeated Kasland 38-25 with Great Fingers seeing off Kaneshie Royals 19-15 on Friday.
On Thursday it was a battle of royals in the all-service clash between Police and Fire, which lived up to the pre-match hype. In the end, both teams shared the spoils with the game ending 23-23.
Ghana Navy brushed aside University of Ghana 38-31 in the other game.
In the female category, Police defeated Fire Service 15-6 to move to second on the log; Prisons run riot over Kasland, beating them 49–09 with Unique Fingers seeing off Cantonment Youth 36-24 to lead the log on six points after three games.
