The International Boxing Association (AIBA) will tomorrow celebrate the International Boxing Day worldwide.
In Ghana, the day will be commemorated with a special amateur boxing championship at the Royal Dede Golden Beach Resort at Korle Gonno in Accra.
The choice of venue for the event, according to the Ghana Boxing Federation (GBF) President, Mr George Lamptey, was to show appreciation to the management of the Beach Resort for their support for the federation in the course of preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
“Hosting the AIBA event at the Royal Dede Golden Beach Resort would be our way of thanking the management for the support they gave the GBF.”
“In the course of our preparation for the Olympic Games, they offered their facilities to the Black Bombers for camping at heavily discounted prices. We are grateful to them.”
Speaking on the event, Mr Lamptey told the Times Sports over the weekend that it will attract a whole new generation of hungry amateur boxers that have been knocking on the doors of the Black Bombers for a place in the national team.
He explained that it will offer the technical team a decent opportunity to have a look at some of the young, upcoming and exciting fighters that have not been scouted.
“I can assure you that there are a lot of the Samuel Takyis and other brilliant amateur boxers out there. The only difference between some of these boys is the fact that they have not been given the opportunity like the Bombers.”
This, he said, will offer them an opportunity to prove themselves to the selectors as well as the fans.
The GBF boss urged the various boxing gyms and coaches to prepare their boxers and contact the GBF Secretariat for details about the competition.
