The Electoral Commission has declared John Dramani Mahama as the winner of Ghana’s 2024 presidential election.
Per the results declared from 267 constituencies, excluding nine constituencies, Mr Mahama polled 6,328,397 votes representing 56.55 per cent of the valid votes cast to beat the current Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), his closest competitor in the 12 candidates presidential election.
Dr Mahamudu Bawumia got 4,657,304 votes representing 41.61 per cent of the valid votes cast.
This declaration is based on results from 267 constituencies, excluding nine constituencies, where the results are still outstanding.
The total votes cast in the 2024 presidential election, per the declaration excluding the nine outstanding constituencies is 11,191,422.
The total rejected votes are 239,109
Total votes cast – 11,430,531
Total registered voters – 18,774,159
Voter turn out based on 267 constituencies is 60.9 per cent.
The nine constituencies where the results are still outstanding are Awutu Senya East, Nsawam Adoagyiri, Akwatia, Suhum, Techiman South, Dome Kwabenya, Ablekuma North, Ahafo Ano North and Damango.
Declaring the results, the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Jean Mensa explained that the total registered voters in all the nine constituencies add up to 947,116.
This means in the event that all the valid voters from the nine constituencies above voted for the candidate who placed second, [Dr Mahamudu Bawumia], the total number of votes he would have garnered will be 5,604,420 representing 46.17 per cent of the total valid votes cast, which would have been 12,138,538.
The inclusion of the outstanding constituencies, the chairperson of the EC said would have given the leading candidate 52.13 per cent, which is still greater than the over 50 per cent required to be declared winner and so even with that scenario, John Dramani Mahama is clearly the winner of the 2024 presidential election.
In the light of the above, Mrs Jean Mensa, the Returning Officer of the 2024 presidential election declared John Dramani Mahama as the winner of the election, and President-elect of Ghana.
