The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ketu South in the Volta Region, Dzifa Gomashie, has lamented the neglect of communities hit by the floods in the Keta Municipality on Sunday.
She said the residents of Keta and Anloga had not been attended to since they were hit by the floods last year.
Madam Gomashie indicated that Francis Asenso-Boakye, the Minister of Works and Housing promised that the affected communities would be considered for the second phase of the Keta Sea Defense project by the end of 2021, but there was currently no contractor on site.
However, Maxwell Lugudor, the Municipal Chief Executive for Ketu South, revealed that the government was yet to begin the construction of 15 two-bedroom housing units for the displaced victims.
He indicated that the housing units would take three months to be fully constructed, but the municipality in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation was currently putting up temporary tents for the victims.
According to her, she requested temporary shelter for the people in case the tidal wave struck again, but that request was yet to be granted and as far as she knew, there was nothing that had been done and not even ordinary issues that NADMO usually send to disaster-prone areas was provided from last year to date.
Madam Gomashie stated that the tidal wave hit the communities in March, May and November after some residents of Keta and Agavedzi in the Volta Region were displaced again by tidal waves on Sunday, after the November incident during which at least 3,000 people were rendered homeless.
She noted that communities such as Abutiakope, Kedzikope and Keta Central were primarily affected and homeless residents were left with nothing to salvage because the recent incident had forced residents to move to higher grounds to seek shelter, while others had no choice but to sleep on mattresses along major roads. –myjoyonline.com
