The bus driver, who fled after his car caught fire burning six persons on the Offinso-Akomadan Highway, has handed himself to the police.
He has been identified as AkwasiAmoateng, 36, and currently in police custody at Akomadan Police station in the Ashanti Region, assisting in investigations.
The Daewoo Grandbird KS bus with registration number GT 4215-17, that the driver was in charge, on November 2, 2021, crashed into a KIA Rhino truck with registration number GB 6983-12, resulting in six people burning beyond recognition.
The Akomadan District Police Commander, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) GyasiAgyeman, confirmed that the driver handed himself to Ahenkro Police post after fleeing from the accident scene.
The Police Commander said that preliminary investigations showed that, the driver was on top speed as he approached a police checkpoint at Akomadan.
“Due to the speed, he could not avoid a head-on collision with a stationary Kia Rhino Truck, parked at the Police checkpoint”, he said, adding the driver was expected to be arraigned in court today.
The accident took place barely a day after 17 people perished and 16 others seriously injured in an accident that occurred at OffinsoAbofour on Monday,November1,2021.
According to the police, the bus was loaded with passengers from Nandom to Kumasi, and about 25 persons were able to escape, but the six persons were trapped and burnt beyond recognition.
