Debate LGBTQI+ issues with reason, not emotions—Emmanuel Asante

Must Read

Former Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana, the Most Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante, has rallied Ministers of the Church to educate and sensitise members on the consequences of the LGBTQI+ culture on the Ghanaian society.

“It is our responsibility as bishops and ministers to help members to understand what is going on, and what we need to know as Christians and not base the issues on emotions but with reason,” he noted.

Most Rev.Prof.Asante cautioned that it must be done with reason, not emotions, since the church could not afford to demonstrate a lukewarm attitude towards the challenging issues confronting humanity in the 21st Century.

He observed that the issues were at the core of religious, traditional and cultural valuesand Christians ought to be firm, steadfast, focused and have a clear picture of the prevailing issues in the society in order to take a firm stance for the progress, growth and development of the church.

According to him, some of the churches in the world had already sacrificed Biblical objectivity for postmodernism’s subjective interpretation of the Bible which was unfortunate and worrying.

Most Rev. Prof. Asante made the call when he preached the sermon at the Adum Wesley Cathedral, in Kumasi at the induction of Right Reverend Stephen Kwaku Owusu as the new Methodist Bishop of Kumasi, who takes over from Rt. Rev. Christopher Nyarko Andam, and will stay in office for six years.

Most Rev. Prof. Asante noted that the postmodernism world had sacrificed Biblical objectivity on the altar of subjective expediency and drew the attention of the clergy to the fact that “we cannot shepherd the flock effectively and efficiently in today’s world without critical consideration of problems and challenges including corruption, craze for money, insecurity and hopelessness of mankind.

“We should come to terms with the reality on the ground and strive to address issues as they are in line with Biblical principles so that society is not swayed by people with emotions and not reason to dilute issues,” he said.

Most Rev. Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana, inducting the new Bishop into office, charged him to uphold the tenets of Methodism and tasked him to administer his functions effectively and efficiently, bringing on board all identifiable groups to promote the unity of purpose. -GNA
