Former Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, has taken legal action against the Multimedia Group over what she claims are several defamatory publications made by the media house.
Ms Dapaah’s lawyer, Victoria Barth, filed the statement of claim on her behalf, stating that Multimedia published false information about her client’s bank accounts ascribed to anonymous and unverifiable sources.
The publications referred to the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) tracking $5m in total bank transactions, finding GHC48m in Ms Dapaah’s Prudential Bank accounts, and other monies in another account.
The OSP later disputed these claims via social media, stating that it had not revealed any specific amounts of money found in Ms Dapaah’s bank accounts.
Despite this, Multimedia continued to post materials alluding to the false statement, which Ms Dapaah argues caused injury to her reputation.
Ms Dapaah is asking for six specific declarations and orders, including a declaration that the publications are false and defamatory, general and exemplary damages, a retraction and apology, and an injunction restraining Multimedia from publishing any further defamatory material.
