Giving details of the Kundum festival yesterday, Apremdohen, Nana EgyaKwamina XI, said an inter-schools quiz competition had been slated from  September 16 to 20,  a clean-up exercise on Sunday, September 25to be followed by prayers with the clergy at the social centre same day.

On Tuesday, September 27, there will be a cleansing of stools followed by traditional drumming, ‘Apremdo goes traditional’ and a free health screening and registration of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) on Wednesday, September 28.

There would be Muslim prayers on Friday, September 30, while the grand durbar is slated for Saturday, October 1, he said.

Apremdohen explained that the ban on noise-making was to allow the earth to rest during the period so that the coming year would be fruitful and successful.

“It’s a solemn moment and we offer food to the stool for their protection and we also pledge that we will honour our part of paying homage to our ancestors. Throughout the year, we traverse on the earth, including farming activities, and so, the earth needs some rest,” he added.

The free health screening, Nana KwaminaXI said was to re-energise the need for the people to go for health checks, and not wait for their conditions to become critical before seeking health care, explaining that the registration of NHIS cards was also to avoid the situation whereby people attend hospitals with expired cards.

He pointed out that the NHIS registration was an all-year activities and not a one-stop shop.

Nana Kwamina XI added “theAponkye(goat) gala is competed by suburbs intheApremdo community and aims at attracting the old and young to the game and to have fun. Whoever wins the competition, we kill a goat, prepare soup and we all partake in it. This is to foster unity and peace in Apremdo.”

On the theme, he said COVID-19 had now become part of people, and stressed that hand washing and wearing of nose masks, must be strictly adhered to at public gatherings, adding, “It’sour collective responsibility.”
