Long distance runner, William Amponsah, put up another spirited display to win the male category of the 2022 National Cross-Country event held in Akim Oda on Saturday.
Representing the Central region, the 24-year-old, finished the race in a time of 28:16:71 to finish ahead of the over 90 participants that entered the competition.
Koogo Atia from the North East region followed in second position with a time of 29:25:61 while Aziz Mohammed from the Central region followed third position with a time of 29:47:95 and David Nakouise of the Upper West region rounded in fourth with a time of 29:54:29.
In the ladies event, Upper East region sensation, Lariba Juliana retained the ladies trophy with an excellent performance, chalking a time of 35:07.90.
She was followed in second position by Ashanti region’s Sherifa Moro with a time of 35:41.51 seconds, Titi Rosina from Upper West in third position in 35:52.35 and fourth placed Addo Naomi from the Ashanti region in a time of 36:44.02.
At the regional level, Central region emerged the new winners with 23 points in the male category, followed by the Upper West region and last year’s winners, Ashanti region in second and third positions with 44 and 55 points, respectively.
The Upper West region dethroned Upper East as regional champions in the female category after amassing 21 points in Saturday’s to become the new champions.
Ashanti region maintained their second position with 34 points with last year’s winners, Upper East region dropping to third with 47 points.
The event, organized by the National Sports Authority (NSA) was attended by major stakeholders as far as the development of sports in the country was concerned.
They included the National Sports Authority (NSA)’s Director General, Prof Peter Twumasi, Accra 2023 Local Organising Committee (LOC) chairman, Dr Kweku Ofosu Asare, representatives from the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) and others.
