Twenty one young girls have passed out in vocational skills after six months of Intensive training at Adjenase Peim near Nsawam in the Eastern Region.
The beneficiaries who were between the ages of 15 and 19 years,and school drop outs were trained in beads making,weave-on,liquid soap,bags,soap making, pastries,sanitisers,slippers and local drinks among others.
The programme which was under the Strategic Approaches to Girls’ Education (STAGE) project was implemented by International Child Development Programme (ICDP) a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) in collaboration with World Education with support from UKAID.
The Country Director of ICDP/STAGE project, Mrs Joyce Larnyoh, in her remarks said at a graduation ceremony here on Wednesday said the training was aimed at promoting social and gender equality, ensuring that girls generated income and became independent.
She said the goal of the STAGE programme was to reduce the barriers that marginalised girls in achieving quality education.
‘’The STAGE programme also contributes both directly and indirectly to the total well being of the child, families and communities,’’ she added.
Mrs Larnyoh said the project was being implemented in 13 communities in the Akuapem South Municipality namely Adjenase Piem,Pakro,Dumpong,Obodan,Attakrom Amanfro,Otiakrom,Aknwansu Obosono,Dago,Oboadaka,Kwame Ntowand Pokrom Nsabaa.
She said by the end of STAGE five year programme, 1,500 girls would be trained in vocational skills and would master crafts persons of their respective field and then offer alumni and mentorship support to other girls.
‘’The beneficiaries who were also trained in numeracy, literacy and life skills would also be provided with stipend and start-up materials to enable them commence their income generating activities,’’ she added.
Mrs Larnyoh stated that the activities of the beneficiaries would be monitored to track their progress.
The Country Director said the project also trained community facilitators, community oversight committee, peer educators and also work with municipal stakeholders to achieve project goals.
She commended the beneficiaries and the facilitators and urged them to impart the knowledge acquired.
The assembly man of Adjenase Piem, Mr Yakubu Ussif, in his remarks commended the management of ICDP for the initiative, stating that it would go a long way to assist the young girls earn a living.
He called for more of such collaboration and urged parents to assist their children to achieve their goals and aspirations in life.
As part of the occasion the girls were presented with certificates from the National Vacation Training Institute (NVTI).
Exhibition of products were also displayed for the public by the graduates.
