Jordan Ayew says legendary Cameroonian striker Samuel Eto’o served as a major inspiration to him during his formative years.
The Ghana forward, who has scored over 100 career goals, cited Eto’o as one of several great players he looked up to, alongside the likes of Didier Drogba, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, and Emmanuel Adebayor.s
Reflecting on his admiration for these illustrious strikers, Ayew singled out Eto’o as his primary source of inspiration. He emphasised the Cameroonian’s exceptional talent, particularly during his time at Barcelona, where he formed a wonderful partnership with Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho.
“When I was young, I was always looking up to strikers, I was looking at our continent brothers like Eto’o, Drogba, Adebayor, and we have Zlatan Ibrahimovic,” Ayew explained as quoted by Ghanaweb.
“Obviously, I always say Eto’o because the time he was at Barcelona was amazing, what he did was amazing, and he’s been a really big influence on us young Africans. Together with Drogba, they have made Africa proud and raised the continent to great heights,” Ayew added.
Eto’o, who is the current president of Cameroon FA, widely regarded as one of best African players of all time, enjoyed a highly successful club career. He also won two Africa Cup of Nations titles and an Olympic gold medal, while retiring as Cameroon’s all-time leading goal scorer with 56 goals.
