Lineker: Premier League record won’t keep Kane at Spurs

Must Read

Gary Lineker does not think Harry Kane would stay at Tottenham just to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record.

The England captain, 29, has entered the final year of his Spurs contract and has attracted plenty of interest from clubs in Europe — most predominantly Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

That would see him leave the Premier League, where he has scored 213 goals as he edges closer to Newcastle legend Shearer’s tally of 260.

But while the desire to break that record has been cited as a reason why Kane will stay put in North London, ex-Spurs ace and Match of the Day presenter Lineker believes winning silverware will be the striker’s priority.

Lineker, 62, told BBC Sport: “Would Harry Kane stay at Spurs just to break Alan Shearer’s Premier League goals record? No.

“I think the problem is Spurs are probably further away than they have been for a long time in that sense. And I love Spurs, I was a player there.

“Yes, it is about personal goals, but it’s not. It’s a team sport and you want to win things.

“I would never tell anyone want to do — it’s his career — and if he stays at Spurs and beats Alan Shearer’s record, in terms of Match of the Day, we would all love to see that.”

Real Madrid are another potential destination as the Spanish giants search for a replacement for Saudi-bound Karim Benzema.

Lineker believes that is a move that would have attracted the Three Lions hotshot but for Real’s interest in Kylian Mbappe, who appears likely to depart Paris Saint-Germain this summer.

The former striker added: “It will be interesting to see what happens with Harry Kane — if he stays or goes.

“I think he was pretty close to going to Real Madrid but then Kylian Mbappe announces he might want to move so I think that put that on hold. Who knows what will happen.”
