Wife of the late Member of Parliament for Mfantseman, Ophelia Mensah Hayford has retained the Mfantseman constituency seat for the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

She polled 36,021 which is 51.93% of the total vote cast against her competitor, James Odziifo Essoun who had 32,438 votes.

The leadership of the New Patriotic Party in October 2020 confirmed Mrs. Hayford’s nomination to replace her husband.

Mrs Hayford retired from the Ghana Police Service following the confirmation after her husband, Ekow Kwansah Hayford, was shot and killed by some armed robbers while on campaign duties.

According to the party, Mrs Hayford, though not a politician, was a grassroots person who is loved by the constituents.

Mr. Hayford was shot and killed on Thursday, October 9 after his car was attacked on the Nkusukum Mankessim-Abeadze Duadze road in the Central Region.

Eyewitnesses say the suspected armed robbers numbering about six shot at the MP’s vehicle when his driver attempted to drive away from the robbery operation.

After the car stopped, the driver was shot by the armed robbers to serve as a deterrent to others who might try to escape.

The MP is alleged to have confirmed his identity to the robbers when asked who the MP of the constituency was. He was then shot twice, resulting in his death.
