The National Gender Commissioner of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Ms Abiba Asoma has advised women to have their breast checked regularly to prevent them from getting breast cancer.

“Always go to hospitals to see health professionals to have your breast checked every month,” she said.

Ms Abiba said this in Tamale, Northern Region, on Wednesday at a free breast cancer screening exercise for women inmates of the Tamale Prisons.

The exercise was organised by the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) and formed part of the activities to mark this year’s breast cancer awareness month.

The theme for this year’s breast cancer awareness month was “Combating breast cancer among female inmates.”

Ms Abiba said breast cancer has killed millions of women worldwide, hence the need for the sensitisation.

She told them to take screening of their breast seriously, since it was the only way to detect any form of abnormalities in the breast to seek immediate medical care.

“It is important that, we do self screening of our breast all the time” she added.

She added that early detection would help them deal with breast cancer effectively.

The women commissioner added that, the disease is deadly and they should not feel shy to go to the health facilities to have their breast checked.

She also called on the men to have their breast checked since they could also develop the disease.

Ms Abiba however, appealed to the general public to come together to create more awareness, promote education to support the patients and survivors of breast cancer in the country.

Superintendent Doris Ameku of the Northern Region Prison Service thanked GRASAG for the gesture.

She said the exercise had being helpful to the inmates, saying that this was the best time for them to have their breast checked.

The Superintendent further called on organisation to always come to their aid to support in checking the health status of the inmates since government alone cannot do it.
