Fourteen persons have been arrested for illegal sand winning, diversion of premix fuel and destruction of forest by a taskforce set up by the Volta Regional Security Council (REGSEC).
The suspects, 10 Ghanaians and four Chinese, have been charged with illegal exploitation of the nation’s natural resources and other environmental offences.
Mr King David Akpabli, Chairman of the taskforce, who confirmed the arrest to journalists, in Ho, yesterday, said the suspects were arrested at North Tongu and Ketu South districts of the region, last week.
According to him, they have been handed to the Volta Regional Police Command for further investigations and prosecution.
Mr Akpabli condemned the wanton destruction of the environment in the region, which was “negatively impacting on water security and economic development”.
He asked sand winners to obtain legal documents and also reclaim lands degraded through their activities.
Mr Akpabli lauded the efforts of the Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa, and Mr Samuel Jinapor, Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, for supporting moves to stop environmental degradation
