Symbolic coins toss atInt’I Fire Fighters Day

Symbolic coins were yesterday laid at the Accra Regional FireService Command in remembrance of fire personnel who died in line of duty.

The occasion was also to commemorate this year’s International Fire Fighters Day to honour fallen personnel of the service.

The Accra Regional Fire Commander, Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO) Alhaji Gibril Nuhu laid a coin on behalf of the Australian Fire Fighters, Divisional Officer Grade One (DOI) Naomi Ofori Adubea laid one for the International Fire Fighters.

The Metropolitan Fire Officer, DOI Alfred Quartey also laid a coin for Ghanaian Fire Fighters, DOI Kwame Duah, the Training Officer at the Regional Command also laid one for civilians who lost their lives in fire outbreaks.

Further, DOI Philip Kortey, Accra District Fire symbolically presented another on behalf of Chief Fire Officers who passed on.

DCFO Nuhustressed the GNFS would honour the personnel who died in line of duty.

“We recognise the role played by personnel in active service for their relentless efforts in ensuring that the core mandate of the service, that is preventing and managing fires are fulfilled.” he added.

DCFO Nuhuassured of the command’s commitment to prevent and management fires so as to ensure the safety of the good people in the country.

He said the service would remember firefighters who died in the line of duty and active service such as DOII Sedor, GroupOfficer I Hannah Yawson, Sub Officer Isaac Newton, Sub Officer Richard Kwabena Bekoe.

Others, he said were DOIII Ernest Akwei, ADO I Comfort Ama Kube, Station Officer I David Tetteh And Aston Isaac Painstil passed away in active service.

“We recognise the role played by all the departed souls who have contributed in diverse ways and in the course of protecting life and property through which they lost their lives,” he added 

He stated that there was the need to intensify fire safety, explaining that the Accra Region recorded 383 fires for the first quarter of 2022 as compared to 265 for the first quarter of 2021.

The Regional Commander appealed to the public to make fire safety a priority, stating that fire safety should a shared responsibility.

Assistant Station Officer (ASTNO) ReverendChristopher Kubge, a chaplain at the Regional Fire Command of the Ghana National Fire Service in a sermon urged the personnel to be faithful, honest during the discharge of their duties.

He called on them not to show lukewarm attitude towards their work, adding that as fire personnel one should be diligent whiles doing their work.

As part of the occasion the personnel went on a float around Korle Bu and its environs with placards with inscriptions such as “Stop smoking on the farm its can cause disaster,” Always check your gas cylinder regulator and hose” educating the public

Additionally, a blood donation exercise was organised to replenish the blood bank.
