The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, has warned that recalcitrant traders who operate along the streets of the Central Business District (CBD) and other key areas of the city will be arrested and prosecuted after the Easter festivities.

According to him, 1,000 members of a task force would be deployed next week to ensure compliance with the sanitation bylaws and also prevent trading along the streets.

Addressing the media last Thursday, he advised traders along the streets to move into the markets after the festivities or have themselves to blame.

MrQuartey noted that traders who operate along the streets of the Central Business Districts have been engaged extensively, especially after the launch of “Operation Clean Your Frontage,” which was introduced by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council seeks to make it obligatory for all individuals and corporate entities to be responsible for the cleaning and greening of their immediate surroundings.

“We want to send a strong signal to them that after the Easter holidays, anybody found selling along the streets will be arrested and prosecuted.

“The trained 1,000 men who have passed out of the training with the military will be deployed starting next week to enforce these by-laws.” The traders should move into the markets for their trades, “he added.

He said the 1,000 personnel form part of the 3,500 recruits who would support the Regional Coordinating Council in making the Operation Clean Your Frontage agenda successful.

Mr. Quartey further noted that cab-tricycles, popularly known as Pragya, were not allowed to operate within the CBD in Accra and Tema Central.

He explained that the restrictions on tricycles were aimed at decongesting the area and enabling law enforcement agencies to maintain law and order.

Between May 16 and 18, he said the Operation Clean Your Frontage Team would embark on a demolition exercise at Tema and along the Spintex Road.

He warned encroaches to move away from settling at unapproved locations.
