4 jailed 120 years for robbery

Four persons were yesterday sentenced to 120 years imprisonment, by an Accra Circuit Court for robbery.

Akpan Daniel, Ishmael Akyene, Basey Okon Edet and Osuoquo Mbuotidem Edem were jailed 30 years each.

They were charged with conspiracy to commit robbery, unlawful entry, possessing instrument intended for unlawful entry, possessing instrument intended or adapted for unlawful entry and possessing firearms without lawful authority.

Chief Inspector Simon Apiorsorn told the court presided over by Evelyn Asamoah that on February 26, 2019, the complainant, Mr Kennedy Nkansah, a resident of Pobiman, near Amasaman, heard noise from his electric alarm system and also saw a light from a flashlight in his bedroom.

This, prosecution said raised suspicion of the complainant that someone had invaded his premises.

Chief Insp Apiorson said that when Mr Nkansah opened the door, he found accused armed with weapons and standing in front of the door.

According to the prosecutor, Edem, pointed a pistol at complainant, while Daniel and Ishmeal, armed with cutlasses and a metal bar, dragged the younger brother of the complainant, Osei Tawiah, out of his room, to join the wife of the complainant in her bedroom.

The court heard that the convicts also locked up two children of the complainant in a bedroom in the house.

According to Chief Insp Apiorsorn, the accused covered the victims with bed sheets and cloths and ransacked the house while Okon Edet wielded a cutlass and monitored the situation.

The court heard that Ishmael took six Samsung mobile phones and Apple mobile phone, all valued at GH¢4,500, and Edem removed the wedding rings of the complainant and his wife from their fingers.

Chief Insp Apiorsorn said Ishmael also took a set of new wedding rings, which the complainant intended to replace with the old wedding rings, valued at GH¢9,600, two half pieces of kente cloths, ten yards of lace materials, two half pieces of hollandaise, all valued at GH¢25,860.

The court heard that Edem also took Compaq laptop computer, valued at GH¢2,800, GHC¢18,000.00 and US$3,000 cash.

Chief Insp Apiorsorn said accused, after the robbery fired several gun shots to scare people.

The complainant, prosecution said, reported the case to the police and accused were arrested at their hideout.
