The Young African for Opportunity (YAFO), has said at least 66.7 per cent of both commercial and private drivers attempted to bribe personnel of the Ghana Police Service, to avoid arrest.
Mr Nathaniel Dwamena, YAFO Programmes Manager, who made the disclosure, stated that some drivers with expired insurance policy stickers attempted to bribe the police.
He said:“there were situations where some drivers talked their way out and some pleaded with the police to get their insurance updated.”
Mr Dwamena who made the disclosure at a stakeholder’s engagement with operators of insurance and transport sectors, in Accra, said such instances constituted 8.3 per cent and 6.2 per cent, respectively.
He said insurance served as incentive to encourage safe driving, and that people, who were involved in road carnage, were neglected due to non-insurance or wrong insurance policies.
Mr Dwamena said according to a research conducted by YAFO, “Ghana’s vehicular insurance policies were not too good.”
He asked insurance brokers, including the government, to ensure that the right policies were initiated, to safeguard lives and property, especially on the roads.
Mr Richard Nii Amarh, a private legal practitioner, said insurance and its related issues must be given the needed attention.
He asked insurance companies to intensify education, to ensure that the public understood insurance policies before subscribing to them.
Mr Amarh cited bureaucratic bottlenecks associated with insurance claims and other related issues that needed to be reviewed.
He said it was to ensure that passengers and road users were well insured, especially with the third-party insurance package.
The YAFO stakeholders’ engagement brought together security experts, legal practitioners, insurance brokers and drivers among other personalities. -GNA
