This year’s West African Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (WASSCE) has taken off smoothly in the Greater Accra Region, with high expectations from school heads and students.
The Ghana News Agency (GNA) on its rounds spotted some students having some revision before the start of the General Science Paper One on Monday.
A few of the students who pleaded anonymity told the GNA that they were well prepared and hopeful of success after the paper.
The GNA observed that hand washing stations have been provided at the examination centres and the halls arranged according to the COVID-19 guidelines.
Mrs Cynthia Nti, the Headmistress of Labone Senior High School, told the GNA that all was set for the exams, with materials arriving on time.
She advised the students to be focused and concentrate on their studies so as to be successful in the exams.
Mrs Nti urged them to desist from all forms of examination malpractices to avoid sanctions and cancellation of papers.
The Labone SHS has a total of 821 students comprising 439 boys and 382 girls writing this year’s examination. She said all candidates were present on the first day of the examination.
At the St. Thomas Aquinas SHS, Mr Paul Amoasi Baidoo, the Headmaster, said management had prepared the students psychologically for the examination in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said all materials arrived early and prayed that it continued to the end of the examination. The School presented 713 students for this year’s examination.
A total of 375,737 candidates are writing the 2020 WASSCE in over 796 centres across the country. Out of the figure, 187,574 are males and 188,163 females.
The Ashanti Region has the highest number of candidates of 87,295, followed by Eastern Region with 56,467 candidates.
Private schools presented a total of 61,899 candidates with public schools presenting 313,838 candidates.
The examination is expected to end on September 5, this year.
Security officers were seen at all the examination centres the GNA visited.
